Local Authorities come in all sizes and shapes. And most Local Authorities have some form of Electronic Document Management (EDM), somewhere within their organisation. Some have got more than one. Some have a fair degree of connectivity between their EDM and intranets, websites and line of business applications. And some, and whisper this quietly, don’t get much value out of their systems, and don’t really have a way forward.
So why a different EDM? Why Alfresco? And why One Point?
Well Alfresco is a different type of EDM. True, it shares many features with the best Commercial software. But it has a number of market-leading features in its own right. It’s evolving faster than its competition. It already has a significant user-base around the world, amongst blue-chip, government, private and 3rd sector organisations, and is growing fast.
Cost is one good reason. That’s upfront purchase and ongoing support costs. If you haven’t got an EDM and are in the market, you should compare the functional specifications and costs.
If you already have an EDM, look at the scale of annual support charges. Have a look at what’s coming over the horizon in terms of product support or transformation, and how much time, effort and money is going to be absorbed. In some cases, much of the basic cost of switching to Alfresco can be covered on the basis of annual support fees alone. Open source isn’t free, as in ‘free beer’, but it’s a sight cheaper than its Commercial cousins.
One Point understands the technology and the world of Local Government. The technical and sector experience that One Point has can make the journey into EDM and the wider world of Electronic Content Management (ECM) and integration with other products that much easier.
